Spanish side Real Madrid will play an Italian side AS Roma at home (Santiago Bernabéu) in a mouthwatering group G UEFA Champions League match.
The teams have met ten times in the elite cup since 2001.
The last time the sides met was in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League campaign, where Real Madrid emerged victorious over both home and away encounters, scoring 2 goals in each outing.
This will be a Champions League debut game for Real’s new Spanish Coach Julen Lopetegui, 52, since the departure of former boss Zinedine Zidane in the summer after lifting the elite cup for three successive outings.
The visiting side reached the semifinals last season and were ousted by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool after managing to kick-out Barcelona in an unforgettable outing in which they lost by four goals to one which was overturned at home by a three goals to nil margin, before succumbing to Liverpool.
Roma have lost four of their last five trips to Spain. Last time they managed to beat a Spanish side in Spain was in 2016/17 in a Europa League campaign round of 32 in which their star striker Edin Džeko scored a hat-trick. Since then they are yet to defeat a Spanish side in Spain.
In yesterday’s top UCL matches; Liverpool defeated Paris Saint Germain by three goals to two, Barcelona whipped PSV by four goals to nil and Inter Milan defeated Tottenham by 2 goals to 1.
In the UCL today; Manchester United travel to meet Swiss side Young Boys FC and Valencia meets Christiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in group H, while in group E Ajax are at home with AEK Athens, and Benfica will clash with Bayern Munich. In group F Shakhtar Donesk faces Hoffenheim and Manchester City hosts Lyon.
