Wayne Rooney was given a sweet sendoff in Thursday’s 3-0 win for England over United States of America at Wembley Stadium, in which he started as a substitute.

The FIFA International friendly match was organised to give Rooney his 120th cap as a way to bid farewell to the team’s record goal scorer, with 53 goals, who retired before this year’s World Cup to create room for upcoming English breed of players.

The 33 year-old replaced his former Manchester United teammate, Jesse Lingard in the 58th minute of the game.

He was given the captains armband by Fabian Delph as earlier organised by the English FA.

The former Man United striker almost scored in the dying minutes of the game in which he was denied by US goalkeeper, Brad Guzan.

Lingard, Trent Alexander Arnold and debutant Callum Wilson, registered their names on the score sheet in the 25nth, 27nth and 77nth and minute of the game, respectively.

According to SkySports, Rooney’s substitute, Lingard, feels his last presence gave the England camp a big boost of confidence, and the record scorer has left a lot of memories.

“It feels strange seeing him again. He’s the same old Wayne I’ve known since when I was young.

“He’s vibrant, a goody guy, and he’s looked after all the young players.

“He helped me a lot with my development when I was coming through, gave me pointers along the way.

“It’s great to have a figure like that in the dressing room to help you out.

“It’s a sad goodbye but he left a lot of memories which we can take on,” he explained.
