Veteran James Chimwaza and the newcomer Shelon Marques were over crowned the champions of the maiden Mdina engineering open golf tournament which was held at the Blantyre Sports club over the weekend.
Chimwaza who saw off a field of 74, claimed victorious in the men’s category after amassed 15 handicap, 79 gross and 64 net while his runner-up Fulkan Gani netted 66 with Medson Kalambule came third with a net of 68.
The long-time chess player Chipilro Mzanda netted 69 followed by Nyakhokho Nsona who got 84 net.
Erick Kazembe had a longest drive while nester Msowoya was nearest to the pin.
Marques chalked a handicap of 29 and net of 73 on the ladies category to edge Diana Kalambule who had 74 net. Emmaculet Singano had a longest drive in this category.
The ever-jovial Chimwaza thanked the organisers for considering to venture into golf tournament for the first time, saying the development showed that the sport growing and had confident.
“The promotion of golf has gone another way. This is a season of comeback after sometime of not coming top in major tournament. It was a high competitive team and a lot of competitors,” said Chimwaza
On the other hand, Marques said was shocked to become the overall winner as this was the first tournament for her to win this year.
“It has been a while since winning a trophy. This has boosted my energy to work hard and come home with many more trophies this year,” she said with stammering.
Jeka Chipopsya, who represented the sponsor Tione Mdina said, was overwhelmed with the crop of the golfers as well as the numbers.
“It shows as if we started sponsoring golf long time ago looking at the participation. This is encouraging indeed that we can consider of comeback for more sponsorship next time,”
