Malawi National Football Team’s Coach Ronny van Geneudgen and his friends in
Belgium; on Wednesday (3rd April, 2019) donated assorted clothes, football
boots, jerseys and footballs among others, to people affected by floods
Speaking when he briefed the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) officials before officially handing over some of the donated items to Mwalija Camp in Chikwawa District, Van Geneudgen, popularly known as RVG, said his friends and family felt that there was a need to assist the affected people.
“When we arrived [ in Malawi], we noticed that there was a need to provide some clothes and football equipment to people in need. We started mobilizing donations to the cause back home [ in Belgium] in 2017.
“After the devastating floods, we thought we could donate to camps and make a difference,” said RVG, who was flanked by wife Veerle and Flames Team Manager James Sangala.
According to RVG, the assorted items, packed in 84 cartons, are worth around K100 million.
DoDMA’s Director of Response and Recovery Harris Kachale commended RVG and his friends for the donation.
“The affected lost most of their property, including clothes. The sports equipment will see to it that people in camps socialize and exercise, which will greatly have a positive impact on them, psychologically,” said Kachale.
