TNM Super League defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets are set to reinforce their coaching panel by hiring their former captain, Peter Mponda, as assistant to Callisto Pasuwa.
The development follows Bullets’ slump in form in recent weeks.
Chief administration officer for the People’s Team, Albert Chigoga, confirmed the development saying Mponda was one of the coaches the club approached to take up the role.
“We spoke to a number of coaches in order to recruit an assistant to Callisto Pasuwa. Peter Mponda was just one of such coaches. We are finalising paperwork and will release a statement on the same,” Chigoga said.
He said the development would see Heston Munthali reverting to his role of strikers’ trainer.
“Nothing has changed in terms of our technical panel, apart from the inclusion of the assistant coach. Heston was only acting as Pasuwa’s assistant. He will continue as a technical panel member in his previous position,” Chigoga said.
Mponda asked for time to comment on the development, which could see him leaving his Southern Region Football Premier Division club, Wizards, to take up the role
“I will tell you my position once everything has been finalized but being given such an opportunity is an honour to me,” he said.
The former Black Leopards defender was fired alongside Belgian Ronny van Geneugden as Flames coaches earlier this year.
He also captained the team during the 2003-04 CAF Champions League campaign when they reached the knockout stages of the continental competition.
