It never rains but pours for Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) following complaints from some Malawi national netball team players over unpaid World Cup allowances in July this year.

The Queens settled for sixth spot during the world showpiece in Liverpool, England.

But four months down the line, the Queens are yet to get game bonuses for five competitive matches and two friendlies.

For a win in competitive matches, the players receive K20,000, half the amount for a draw and nothing for a loss.
They get K10,000 for winning a friendly match.

This means, the players are owed K120, 000 each for participating in the World Netball Championship.

One of the senior players, confided that they have lost patience with Nam over the allowances.

“Everyday they just promise us but they do not fulfill it . We do not know when we will get the allowances because we have waited for so long,” she said.
The Queens returned home on Thursday from South Africa after finishing on second position having lost only a single match.

When contacted yesterday, Nam President, Khungekile Matiya, and General Secretary, Carol Bapu dodged the issue of allowances.
Both Matiya and Bapu did not return our calls as promised.

Nam just like many sports associations receive annual grants from the government through Malawi National Council of Sports for various programmes.
Sports Council Acting Executive Secretary, Henry Mereka, said his body refused to release funds without a financial report from Nam after the World Cup.

“We have been asking for the financial reports from Nam on both technical and financial. But we only got technical report since July so it is difficult for us to release more funds. We have reminded them on several occasions but to no avail,” Mereka said.
