Malawi national netball team has received a morale boost after multi-talented Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda has rejoined the squad ahead of preparations for the forthcoming Africa Netball Championship in Cape Town, South Africa.

Vinkhumbo, netballer and also footballer had earlier excused herself from the tournament citing personal issues.

However, the Kukoma Diamonds goalkeeper-cum-defender has rejoined training on Tuesday.

General Secretary of Netball Association of Malawi (NAM), Carol Bapu, said they were delighted to welcome back Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda following uncertainty surrounding her availability.

“Every team wants to have its best players at the tournament,” Bapu said.

Meanwhile, Queens Coach, Peace Chawinga- Kaluwa, has asked her charges to be united ahead of the championship to run from October 18 to 23.
Chawinga-Kaluwa, who replaced Griffin Saenda Senior, is aiming at the trophy which the Queens surrendered on home soil in 2013.

“We have told players that they should unite and play as a team. The mentality of playing as individuals should stop. This is about team-work whereby everyone’s contribution is needed. Without love, this can’t be achieved. They should learn to play according to instructions because without strategies applied, we will be back to square one,” Chawinga-Kaluwa said.

The First Choice Tigresses mentor said she would select players on merit.

“I am taking performers who will be outstanding in their positions. We have two or three players per positions. Those who will perform in training will be picked,” Chawinga-Kaluwa added.
