Be Forward Wanderers Chairperson Gift Mkandawire and his supporters committee counterpart, Mervin Nkunika, have said they will not seek re-election when their respective mandates expire in December.

Mkandawire, who has shown interest in contesting as an executive committee member during Football Association of Malawi’s elections in December, said he believes it was time to leave the stage and take up new challenges after serving the club for many years.

“I have always enjoyed being Wanderers chairman but it is time to move on. After consulting my family and relatives, I have decided against seeking another term of office. But I remain a true Wanderers fan and I wish the club well for next season,” he said.

The former Super League of Malawi official said his decision was also aimed at giving others a chance to contribute towards Wanderers’ success.

Nkunika said he has decided against seeking re-election on personal grounds.

Last month, Nkunika said at the time of taking over the position from his predecessor, supporters challenged him to ensure that Wanderers beat bitter rivals Nyasa Big Bullets in the TNM Super League.

But he admitted failure to achieve the target and openly declared that he would not blame supporters if they chose not to re-elect him.

“I was given a two-year mandate to head the supporters committee and the period expires in December. My fellow supporters should know that I will not stand again during our elections next month. I will just be helping whenever my services are required,” Nkunika said.

The top fan did not clearly state whether his decision was based on Wanderers’ failure to defeat Bullets during his tenure.

Wanderers had a miserable weekend as they lost 2-0 to Blue Eagles, a result which saw them relinquish top position on the Super League log table to Bullets.
