WHY NAM?

Some sport analysts have blamed Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) officials for what they call plotting own downfall during Malawi Olympics Committee (Moc) polls at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge on Saturday.

Nam president, Khungekile Matiya, General Secretary, Carol Bapu and the association’s former boss, Rosy Chinunda, were contesting for executive positions but they all failed as Andrew Mkwezalamba and Ousborne Banda won.

The development has thrown the association into disrepute for lack of team work.

Sports analyst, George Chiusiwa, said it was not surprising that Nam officials lost at Moc elective annual general meeting.

“The leadership at Nam has not been strategic on important issues such as the body’s vision and long term goal to the extent that the association can’t be taken seriously.

The netball association is also failing to uniformly stamp its authority over its regional netball affiliates, hence it has failed to garner the appropriate national level support at forums like the Malawi Olympic Committee. A national representative institution like Nam members cannot work in isolation,” he said.

Chiusiwa said Nam has lost a voice as it has no representative.
“That Nam officials have all failed at the Moc polls means that the body’s voice has been lost effectively. By all means Nam can’t operate without a meaningful voice at platforms like the Malawi Olympic Committee,” he said.

Chiusiwa feared the development can affect Nam’s operations as the leaders have shown that they were working independently.
“Again, this clear lack of team work and internal supports at Nam is inimical to its effective operations,” he said.

Chiusiwa called for Malawi National Council of Sports intervention.

“But all is not lost since the Malawi National Council of Sports is mandated to handle some of these institutional lapses and defects at the national sports associations. The Sports Council should move in quickly to address these organisational challenges at our sports associations. The problems are not endemic to Nam alone, as many other associations have these institutional deficiencies. Netball is one of Malawi’s celebrated sport s and we can’t afford to have a Nam that is working in this environment,” he said.

Another sport analyst, George Kaudza-Masina, who is former Football Association of Malawi Acting General Secretary, said Nam officials have lost a plot and they had demonstrated the highest order of selfishness.
