Mighty Wanderers have displayed
sheer remorse for comments made by
their outspoken general secretary
David Kanyenda that their rivals Big
Bullets bewitched their promising
winger Omega Mhone, popularly known as ‘Megadinho’. This comes in the wake of Kanyenda’s
recent claims to the media that Mhone
was attacked by a strange illness after
being bewitched by Bullets
Apparently, the Bullets had threatened
to sue Kanyenda and the Nomads for defamation. The Nomads, through their
chairperson George Chamangwana,
have since apologised to their age-old
rivals, admitting that their GS who is
also club spokesperson will be
summoned for a disciplinary hearing. “I spoke to Bullets GS Higger
[Mkandawire] and I apologised for the
statements that were uttered by our
GS. “Further to that, we have also written
them a letter of apology retracting
whatever was said by the GS and
apologising on the same. “He [Kanyenda] might have made the
statement out of excitement, but he
certainly went out of his way and we
strongly condemn whatever he said,
we are very sorry to BB for the
damage the statements might have caused. To that effect, we will summon
him for a disciplinary hearing and then
the executive committee will
determine the way forward,” said
Chamangwana. The Nomads boss also said football is
supposed to be a source of
entertainment and not a platform for
creating hatred. “Bullets are our arch-rivals and the
rivalry adds excitement to the game,
but when we go out of our way by
uttering such sensitive comments then
we are losing the plot terribly,” added
Chamangwana. A well-placed source confided to The
Nation that the Nomads are
contemplating stripping Kanyenda of
his responsibility as spokesperson. Some Nomads supporters are also
reported to have condemned
Kanyenda’s remarks through their
Southern Region chairperson Yona
Malunga. However, Chamangwana could
neither confirm nor deny the rumour,
insisting that the issue will be tabled
after getting Kanyenda’s side of the
story. Bullets GS Mkandawire confirmed
having been contacted by
Chamangwana. “It is true that he called me twice to
apologise on behalf of his club and I
should state that he sounded very
remorseful. “Mr. Chamangwana also stated that
they have written a letter of apology
and we should be getting it today
[yesterday]. We appreciate Wanderers’
efforts to condemn their GS’ conduct
and we hope they will discipline him. As I said earlier on, Kanyenda’s
conduct was very unfortunate and
had the potential to create tension
between the two teams,” said
Mkandawire. Kanyenda last week said he had
spoken to his Bullets counterpart on
the matter. “I spoke with Higger and we have a
truce. BB are our friends, they are
sportsmen and I am certain we’ll reach
a compromise regarding their
concerns,” he said.
