Malawi’s dream of qualifying to 2015 African Cup of National to be played in Equatorial Guinea came to an end last night after the team was held to a goalless draw by Ethiopia at Addis Ababa Stadium.
Malawi’s fate was sealed by Group B leaders Algeria’s shocking and suspicious 2-0 loss to the Flames rivals Mali who joined the Desert Foxes as representatives from the group.
The flames started the game on high note pressing the home side from left and right but this effort was not enough to break the Ethiopians defence.
The Flames failed to make significant attempt at scoring despite creating some tempting chances.
Come second half, flames started the game on slow pace giving chances to Ethiopia to take control of the game.
Young Chimodzi pulled out Robert Ng’ambi and replaced him with Robin Ngalande and Gastine Simkonda of Moyale Barracks was replaced by Frank Banda.
The changes did not yield anything as flames striking force was completely out of the game.
The flames first realistic chance came on 71st minute through Kanyenda, who missed one on one after being set free by Limbikiani Mzava.
Full time it was goalles draw.
Speaking after the game, flames coach, Young Chimodzi said his side performed below expectation.
Meanwhile the development means Algeria and Mali will represent group B at AFCON.
