Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu has said the chances of Flames playing in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup expected to take part later this month in Ethiopia is very slim.
Nyamilandu said: “The reason of pulling out was due to lack of funds and besides that, we exhausted all our funding during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign and they cannot raise money to cater for other expenses such as players’ bonuses.”
He said, as such, the association will be selective on tournaments to participate in.
We will also forego international friendly matches on Fifa calendar dates.
The national team is now on break until next year when we will take part in the Cosafa Cup in May. Depending on availability of resources, we may also take part in Chan [Championship of African Nations], he said.
Nyamilandu also said FAM will continue with its fund-raising drive to cater for next year’s engagements.
But we are also mindful that we have an official sponsor and we have part of next year’s sponsorship remaining.
Flames last took part in Cecafa tournament in 2012 in Uganda as guests.
