Katoto Secondary School on January 8 will for the first time be hosting the Presidential Netball trophy finals.
The three-day competition will see 12 teams including eight seeded sides battling for the trophy.
Malawi-Sports speaking to Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) general secretary Carol Bapu in an interview said it was a blessing in disguise to stage the Presidential finals in Mzuzu as the courts at Katoto have just been constructed.
“The courts are new and it would be a befitting event to hold the finals at Katoto Secondary to give the teams and fans something different,” she said.
Bapu said Nam expects netball die-hards from the Northern Region to grace the finals in large numbers.
“This is also the first time since the construction of the courts for Katoto Secondary School to host such big event. This gives us the confidence that people will show up in good numbers,” she said.
Bapu was optimistic that umpires would handle the games professionally by following the rules and regulations without fear or favour.
“We will also hold a pre-tournament meeting where rules and regulations would be discussed,” she said.
According to Bapu the event shall see the winners walking away with K4 million while the runners-up will be pocketing k2.5 million.
Diamonds that are defending the trophy having beaten Complex Tigresses in last year’s final. The two alongside MTL Queens will represent the Southern Region.
Blue Eagles Sisters, Civonets and Mafco Soldiers will represent the Central Region while the North has Lameck Queens and Karonga Queens.
The seeded sides would be joined by regional champions Alliance Capital Stars (South), Airwing (Eastern), Green Sisters (Centre) and Mimosa Queens (North).
