Some Super League players during the finals of a three-day Union Building Contractors Christmas Under-14 and Under-20 bonanzas held in Lilongwe appealed to individuals and corporate world to support Under-14 football leagues as one way of improving soccer and insuring Flame’s future.
The finals which were played at Chilinde Primary School ground and was graced by notable players like: Blessing Tembo of Silver Strikers, Asedi Ayam of Airborne Rangers, Bright Phiri of Epac, Mavuto Chipolopolo of Civo and Ishmael Thindwa who plays in Zimbabwe at Caps United .
The players hailed the Union Building Contractors for sponsoring the bonanza further stating that the future of national teams rest in supporting grass roots soccer.
According to Blessings Tembo Under-14 is a foundation of soccer everywhere but we seem to ignore it. If we kill football at this stage then our national team will continue to suffer.
“We have watched skills and good football from young players. They have showed us that they have potential and it’s for us to help nurture the talent,” said Asedi Ayam.
Sponsors, Kim Kamau of Union Building Contractors assured the community of continued support.
Kamau, who is also from Matindi FM sports desk, said the company will come up with a K300 000 Easter Bonanza in April.
In the Under-14 category, Villa FC emerged champions after beating Troopers 5-4 in a penalty shoot out after a barren 90 minutes.
In the Under 20, Troopers FC trounced Black Rangers 4-0 to win the championship.
