The Zambezi Challenge Cup which slated for February 21-23 in Lilongwe this year seems to be on track as two clubs from Mozambique and one from Zimbabwe have shown interest to take part.
Malawi-Sports speaking with Top Sports operations director Kelvin Moyo in an interview said the three teams are defending champions Caps United from Zimmbabwe and top Mozambican Mocambola League sides Maxaquene and Costa Dol Sol.
“All the three teams have shown interest, but we will only choose two depending on the progress of the discussions we are having,” said Moyo.
However, Moyo said as defending champions, Caps’ participation is automatic.
“Besides, we cannot pick two teams from one country. We would rather have two foreign and two local teams taking part,” he said.
Moyo further disclosed that the organising committee has chosen Big Bullets and Mighty Be Forward Wanderers as the local teams to take part.
“But, as I said, we are yet to discuss the logistics with the local teams. We have chosen Wanderers because they were last year’s losing finalists where Bullets are the domestic club champions,” he said.
He said Lilongwe-based Bull’s Eye has been sub-contracted to manage the tournament while EE Traders, an accounting firm, will handle the financial aspects.
