The Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) has apologized for not giving out medals to winners of the Southern Africa Cross Country Trophy, a competition that took place on Saturday this week at Njamba Park in Blantyre.
The failure by the association to award the winners at the event has angered both participants and fans who are blaming AAM for incompetence in organizing the completion.
Speaking to Malawi-sports.com one of the competitors who opted for anonymity said she is delighted to be to a winner at the competition but said she is not happy with the fact that she has nothing to show after all her effort.
“I was mad when I heard that we will receive our medals at a later date. Although they have assured us, I still don’t believe these people (organizers) because they could have told us that earlier than making fools out of us. It’s very painful,” she said.
Commenting on the issue Mabvuto Makolija one of the fans who came to watch the competition said that the Association must make it possible to fulfill their promise for what they have done is unspeakable.
“I came all the way from Mulanje only to watch the competition, this means Malawians love athletics but what the association has done by not giving out Medals is like killing the sport in Malawi because this will demotivate our beloved players,” said Makolija.
However, the association’s Chairperson Frank Chikwembeya has apologized for the development and stressed that AAM will fulfill their promise of giving out the medals at a later date.
“We had some minor problems which we are yet to fix, however am assuring Malawians that they should not worry over the issue because very soon everything will be sorted out,” Chikwembeya said.
Chikwembeya added that people should not lose trust in the association but work hand in hand with them in promoting athletics in Malawi.
The event took place on 21st February this year and was attended by many people including athletes from across Malawi.
