Ivory Coast has ended its 23 years African Cup of Nation Championship drought by beating Ghana 9-8 through post match penalties.
After the cup final ended goalless after 120 minutes of tense football, the penalty shootout went to sudden death. Drama started to unfold as Ivory Coast players missed two early sport-kicks, giving Ghana an upper hand as the scored their opening penalties.
Don’t say die until bones are rotten, the saying goes. Ivory Coast came back into the game as two players for Ghana also missed their penalties, sending the game into a wire.
Ghana goalkeeper Razak Braimah was the man whose penalty was saved by Copa Barry, who then got up and netted the very next kick to win the contest.
Ivory Coast won the first African Cup of Nation (AFCON) in 1992 and this is the second African Cup of Nation Championship in a space of 23 years.
