Malawi’s female boxing star Agnes Mtimaukanena-Mwando has made a remarkable come after taking a two year old break from boxing by beating Tanzania’s Amina Mhubira in a six-round middleweight non-title bout that took place at Robin’s Park in Blantyre Sunday night.
From the start it was evident that Mtimaukanena would become victorious when she went flying with flurry of punches that floored the Tanzanian in the first two rounds.
In all rounds, her performance left no doubt who the winner could be. No wonder all the judges—Yolanda Kaitano, Nginjale Chitenje and Desire Makawa —scored 60-52, 60-52 and 63-44 in her favour.
“I could have knocked out my opponent in the early rounds, but she is also a strong boxer,” said Mtimaukanena-Mwando after the bout.
Even much more exciting was the main supporting welterweight bout involving Chikondi Makawa and Bright Mdoka. At no time did the two pugilists cling on to each other during their entire eight-round showdown; only clean punches and tactical defenses prevailed until Makawa excelled through unanimous points decision.
