Reining champions Diamond Queens last Saturday got off the hook as the barely beat Thunder Queens in the Rainbow Paints 25th Anniversary Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) held at Blantyre Youth Centre.
It was a heated game as Diamonds had to work extra hard to become victors when they beat their Blantyre rivals by 31-27 baskets.
A Diamonds defence mounted by Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira and Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda proved too strong for any loopholes and an attacking force consisting of Grace Chazungulira and Jessica Mazengera-Sanudi proved tough for Thunders.
It was no surprise, therefore, to see the first two quarters ending 10-4 and 18-11 in favour of Diamonds.
After a half time pep talk from their team manager Annie Kapatuka-Sanga, Thunders seemed to be on the brink of victory as they came back to level the score 22-22 in the third quarter but to only loose in the final minutes.
Elsewhere Complex Tigresses beat Alliance Capital Sisters 77-28 while Airwing Sisters and Chilomoni Sisters triumphed over Antonio Sisters 62-17 and Gerald Tasaukadala 42-34, respectively.
During the next fixtures on Saturday Complex Tigresses will meet Alliance Capital Stars, Chilomoni Sisters will take on Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters while newcomers Antonio Queens will date Airwing Sisters and Shizaella Queens will clash with Airwing Sisters.
On Sunday Alliance Capital Stars will take on Antonio Queens with Diamonds facing Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters while Complex Tigresses will then entertain Antonio Queens and then Thunder Queens to play Prison Sisters.
