Malawi national team the flames has been booted out of the Cosafa Cup in South Africa by the Mambas of Mozambique through post match penalties despite scoring for goals within 90 minutes of the game.
The game was played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Monday night.
Flames dominated the game throughout the 90 minutes but two own goals by Limbikani Mzava and Lucky Malata were enough to spoil the whole game, forcing the match to go into penalty shot out as it ended in two-all draw.
Lucky Malata, Captain was the first to cause havoc on Flames as he scored own goal 10 minutes in the first half of the match due to communication break down at the back but Flames equalized 20 minutes in the second half.
Flames increased the lead in the 89th minute of the through Limbikani Mzava through a penalty after Christopher John Banda was brought down by Mozambican defender in the box.
As everyone was thinking that Flames had qualified to the next round of the tournament, Mzava changed goal post by scoring in his own net to make it 2-2.
The penalty shootout went to sudden death, where Sulumba missed the decisive kick to see Mozambique through to the last four, where they join Namibia, Botswana and Madagascar.
Meanwhile flames will face South Africa South Africa’s Bafana Bafana this Wednesday in plate section of the Cosafa Cup.
