The Malawi National Netball Team the Queens have arrived home from Sydney Australia where they went to participate in the 2015 Netball World Cup.

The team was welcomed by hundreds of netball lovers converged at the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe chanting songs of praise.

As this was not enough, the country’s First Lady Madame Gertrude Mutharika flanked by Minister of Sports Grace Obama Chiumia was also there.Queens222

Madam Mutharika said she was impressed with the talent and the skills that the Malawi National Netball Team showed in Australia.

“I followed the competition with keen interest and I must say that I am impressed with how the team performed. I made it in my mind that I will make it a surprise to come and warmly welcome you back home,” said Mutharika.

The First Lady therefore pledged support to the queens to make sure that they continue putting Malawi on the map.

“You have done us proud our girls and be assured of my support in anything that I can assist you,” she said.

On his part, President of Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) Rose Chinunda said though they have failed to maintain their previous position five, the girls fought a good fight.

“As you are already aware, we played eight games and we managed to win five games and we lost three games. The exciting part of it is that we managed to beat Sri Lanka with 108 baskets to only eighteen.

“The excitement was boosted when at the end of the tournament; our own Mwai Kumwenda was chosen as the best player. This means that Mwai is the best player in the world,” said Chinunda. queens 344

This according to Chinunda conveyed Malawi as the best team as it has broken the record of scoring over hundred baskets in a world cup race.

Mwai Kumwenda could not hide her excitement by thanking her colleagues as well as her family for the wonderful performance she showed in Australia.

“On my own I could not have managed to get myself this trophy, but with the assistance of my fellow players and my family as well, I made it,” Kumwenda said.

Malawi Queen are now on position six globally and on position two in Africa.

Meanwhile, some well wishers have donated a sum of K 2.7 million to the queens as a way of appreciating the wonderful performance they showed in Australia.Queens333

Airtel Malawi who is the official sponsors of the Queens have pledged continuous support to the team and organised a lunch for the Queens at Ufulu Gardens in Area 43 in Lilongwe.
