Malawi national football team’s dream of progressing to the second round of 2018 World Cup Qualifying campaign suffered a big blow following 2-0 loss to the Taifa stars of Tanzania in match played at Benjamin Mukapa National Stadium on Wednesday.

Flames started the game on the high note pressing the host from left and right but Tanzania managed to contain the pressure.

Tanzania took a slender lead in the 19th minute of the first half Mbwana Samata after defensive error by Limbikani Mzava and Miracle Gabeya.

Thomsa Ulimwengu increased the lead three minutes later as Flames goalkeeper Simplex Nthala went to bed while on duty.

In the second half, Flames coach Ernest Mtawali made tactical changes to the lineup by bringing in Gabadinho Mhango, Manaseh Chiyesa and Isaac Kaliyati for Mecium Mhone, Robin Ngalande and Gerald Phiri.

The changes did not yield any results as Tanzania managed to hold to the lead and the match ended in a 2-0 in favour of Tanzania.

Malawi face Tanzania in the return on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium in which the two-legged winner date Algeria in the next round.
