Football Association of Malawi (FAM) plans to construct a beach soccer mini stadium on its land located adjacent to the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe as one way of bringing the game close to the people.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu disclosed this at FAM extraordinary general meeting (EGM) when he updated delegates on the project.
“All formalities for the land have been finalised and FAM will very soon be constructing a fence to safeguard the place in readiness for intended developments which will include offices, a football pitch and the much anticipated offshore beach soccer pitch,” said Nyamilandu.
“The project is being financed under the Fifa Goal project five, which is a continuation of developments being done at Chiwembe, and Mzuzu,” explained the FAM boss when asked to elaborate more on funding.
Beach Soccer Malawi (BSM) said the construction of the stadium will help to raise revenue apart from growing the sport.
“Although the project is under its conceptualization stage awaiting final approval of the financiers, as an association which initiated the growth of the game we are very excited with,” said BSM general secretary Davies Sado in an interview.
“We discussed this project when Nyamilandu was consulting affiliates for his presidential bid and he promised to implement the project once re-elected. It is very pleasing, therefore, to note that he is living to his promise,” he said.
