Bayonets were crowned champions of G.Y. Imports and Exports, DR Print basketball tournament when they defeated hosts, Brave Hearts, 60- 51 during a grand final at Civo Basketball Court in Lilongwe.
The K2.7 million Brave Hearts Basketball Challenge, which was sponsored by Lilongwe-based sister companies, G.Y Imports & Exports and Dr Print, attracted eight teams from all three Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) zones.
On their way to the final, Bayonets beat Dream Team in the semifinal, whereas Brave Hearts defeated Bunda Buffaloes.
Bayonets captain, Kondwani Nyanda, said Brave Hearts gave them a tough game.
“We had thorough preparations and morale was good among the players. It was a good game and Brave Hearts also played well,” Nyanda said.
His counter-part, Limbani Chiumia, accepted defeat, saying silly mistakes cost the team.
For being champions, Bayonets received a trophy and K600, 000 with Brave Hearts pocketing K300, 000 from Dr Print and G.Y Imports & Exports.
Bunda Buffaloes, who defeated Dream Team 66-61 in the third-place play-off, got K200, 000.
Bayonets ’ point-guard Francis Mpakeni, was awarded K50, 000 and K25, 000 respectively after being named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Most Disciplined Player.
G.Y Imports and Exports and Dr Print managing director, Griffin Kalua, pledged to continue sponsoring the tournament.
“We have been greatly encouraged with the spirit of hard work and dedication demonstrated by the participating teams. As sponsors, we are ready to come back next year,” Kalua said.
G.Y Imports and Exports are suppliers of stationery; ICT equipment, furniture and household items, while Dr Print are specialists in printing of T-shirts, advertising banners, fliers and other printing services.
