Malawi national football team will face Sierra Leone in a friendly game on March 22 ahead of Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said the team would leave for Sierra Leone on March 20 through Ethiopia.

Nyirenda said the team would arrive in Sierra Leone’s capital, Free Town for the dress rehearsal.

He said the team would leave for Guinea after the game to be played in the evening.

“The team will leave Malawi on March 20 to play a friendly against Sierra Leone on March 22. This game will help the team to tune up because we failed to secure a friendly apart from Sierra Leone,” Nyirenda said.

We cannot manage to secure friendly matches easily with high profile teams in the absence of agents who need at least US$10,000 or US$15,000 fee.

Malawi was hoping to face Mali but it failed to secure the friendly.

FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said the friendly game would help  the Flames Coach Ernest Mtawali to assess his charges before the crucial encounter.

He said the Guinea game would determine Malawi’s destination in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

“This is the final game of the first round and if we collect six points over Guinea he stand a better chance of finishing at least on position 2.”
