Goodwin Mwakanema was elected chairman Blantyre and Districts Darts League (BDDL) and immediately pledged to introduce The Chairman’s trophy at K200,000.
Mwakanema beat Harry Msiska by 31 voyes to 15 during the league’s annual general meeting (AGM) held at Moth Club at Sunnyside on Saturday.
The delegates ushered in a new committee except for Diovan Surtee from BSC, who retained her position as general secretary.
Isaac Masinga floored incumbent Palije Nyirenda by 36 votes to 10. Benson Bakali withdrew from the race at the start of the elections.
Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka from Redbulls beat incumbent Brave Chirwa of MPC darts team by 34 votes to 11 for the post of treasurer Talimba Mwalwanda of MPC was voted in as vice-treasurer (29 votes) beating Daniel Mwalwayo from Poly CEC (5 votes) and Robert Gongolo from BSC (11 votes).
Mwakanema said he hasn’t yet identified the sponsor for the Chairman’s Trophy but he will still roll it oit from his personal resources.
He also pledged to set up a secretariat and he donated a lap top, a printer and a dart board.
“Through my Vision 2020, I intend to increase club participation from 13 to 20. I also intend to revive the less active clubs and those that are defunct,” he said.
On sponsorship, Mwakanema said he has courted potential sponsors selling his proposal to support the sport.
“My aim is not to obtain seasonal sponsorship but to strike a contract with a minimum of five years. In this way we are assured of long term activities.
Mwakanema also sourced funding for pre-season tournaments at K400,000 at Smilemart at Chadzunda on 12th March. On the 19th they took the party to Tedzani and on Easter Saturday, the darts party was at While Village.
“The pre-season sponsors have pledged more support for me even in the future to make darts more vibrant,” he told the delegates.
