Kukoma Diamonds won title after beating Tigresses Sisters in Airtel Money Netball Championship of this year which played at the Don Bosco in the Capital Lilongwe.
Both teams are from Blantyre which met in the final after overcoming Lilongwe giants Civonets and Blue Eagles Sisters in semi-final games which played at the same venue on Friday, May 20, 2016. Tigresses managed to final after beating determined Civonets 40-37 in an exciting semi-final, while Diamonds reached the finals after beating Blue Eagles Sisters 47-34 baskets.
Finals on Saturday, Tigresses took lead 8-7 in the first quarter.
However, the next quarters, game was not on their side, as in second one which ended 18-14, third 31-27 where in final quarter 47-34 all in favour to Diamonds.
At the end of the game, Diamonds Coach Noel Mussa expressed delight with the win and thanked his ladies for making it to crown.
On the other hand, Tigresses Coach Peace Chawinga Kalua attributed their loss to the officiating team for favouring the Diamonds.
“Our girls put up a grand fight but we have been let down by the umpires especially Sibongile Moyo. She blew almost 10 fouls against our team, which was very strange. I rarely talk about officiation but today it was just too much. We did not deserve to lose the game but the umpires helped our colleagues win the game,” said Kalua.
Diamonds went home with K8 million for becoming champions, Tigresses got K3 million while Blue Eagles Sisters pocketed home K1.7 million.
