Ted Dumitru, former Bafana Bafana coach died on Thursday morning, after reportedly collapsing at the Eastgate shopping centre.

Dumitru is a retired football manager who last worked as a technical director for Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premier Soccer League.

He was 76-years-old.

His South African coaching career began in 1985 when he signed on with the Kaizer Chiefs. Dumitru won many national trophies with the team, and led the team to back to back PSL championship victories.

“The Professor”  also led Mamelodi Sundowns to two league titles as well as CAF championship runners up in 2001.

Dumitru’s highly successful turns with both Sundowns and Chiefs led to his appointment as coach to the national team in 2005.

He published a book about football in 2007, ‘Maximal Training’ in Germany.

Over the past few years, he was part of the South African Football Coaches Association.
