Many have faulted Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s system of selecting Malawi Under-20 National Football Team players as it cannot produce good players.
According Northern Region Youth Football Committee’s General Secretary, Desire Bellings, said much as the exercise was successful in the region, the system is more complicated.
“The exercise went on well but it was very disorganised. At first we were told [by Fam officials] that players that will come from outside the [Mzuzu] city will be refunded their transport costs, but that was not the case.
“In addition, the exercise took place within a day and it was cumbersome. And I feel that if the exercise was extended to another day or two, we could have had a wider range of players to select from,”he said.
Bellings, whose region has produced seven players, therefore, said that Fam should consider organising a similar exercise in districts as most good players did not turn up for the initial exercise because they cannot afford covering transport costs.
Fam conducted the trials across the country in order to select players for the Junior Flames side, which will take part in the 2016 Council for Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) tournament slated for South Africa from December 7 to 17.
