South Africa’s top rowing athlete Lawrence Ndhlovu said Malawi has the potential to excel in the game on the international stage.

He said that in Salima during the closing ceremony of a week-long rowing coaching course.

Ndhlovu is a first South African rowing athlete to win gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

He said he was satisfied with the strides the country has made in developing the game.

“The sport is growing fast in Malawi but it is up to the athletes to take it seriously because there is great potential. If the athletes continue working hard, Malawi will manage to compete at top level,” Ndhlovu said.

Malawi Olympic Committee President, Oscar Kanjala urged the athletes to work hard if they are to realise their dreams.

Rowing Association of Malawi General Secretary, Pope Mzumara said the training was of great importance.

“It was a fruitful week and the athletes have been drilled on the basics of the sport. We are in the right direction and, very soon, we will start competing for medals on the international stage,” Mzumara said.

He added that the association is targeting qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, graced the event.

During the course, Malawian athletes tested their skills against rowers from Namibia, Uganda and Kenya.

At the end of the training, the athletes and coaches received certificates.
