Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions will on October 27 honor retired boxers who starred in the ring between 1970s and early 1980s.
The stable’s director Mike ‘Bangwe 1’ Chitenje yesterday said so far, four boxers; ‘Tough’ Ben Chitenje, Tar Baby ‘Bazooka’ Maseko, Bester Saopa and Bakayawo have been identified.
He said the ceremony is slated for Chigwembere Village, Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje and it will also be a celebration of Chitenje Senior’s 75th birthday.
“These are our legends who charmed boxing lovers with their boxing skills in the good old days.
“Unfortunately, others such as Justice ‘Namadzi Bomber’ Mahilasi and ‘King’ Marshal Jetu are deceased, but we will still honor them post-humously.
“However, there are others that are still alive and we are trying to trace them,” Chitenje said.
‘Bangwe 1’ also said the ceremony will be used to announce Mulanje Last’s return to the boxing scene after almost a two-year break.
“To that effect, we will unveil about 10 new boxers and we have organized five bouts as part of the event,” Bangwe 1 said. “The current generation does not know that this country used to have boxing greats such as ‘Tough’ Ben Chitenje, ‘Jetu’, ‘Tar Baby’, Drake Thadzi, Namadzi Boimber, Ali Faki, Joe ‘Cobra’ Nyirenda and this is commendable,”
