Eastern Region Police has arrested 11 people for the suspected theft of building materials at the Zomba Stadium, which is under construction.
According to Eastern Region Police publicist Inspector Joseph Sauka, the 11 include a site foreman, guards, stores clerk and drivers who work at the facility.
“We have started recovering some items, including 30 bags of cement, 30 iron sheets and 72 steel bars. However, we would make more arrests as the accused continue to reveal names of their accomplices,” he said.
Sauka said the police arrested the suspects after receiving a tip off from well-wishers on the syndicate that the items were being sold in Chikwawa, Zomba and Blantyre districts.
“The suspects are currently on remand at Zomba Central Prison and will be appearing in court shortly to answer the charge of theft by servant,” he said.
Zomba City Council Public Relations Officer Mercy Chaluma said the council would issue a statement on the matter.
DEC Construction Limited started constructing the 20,000-capacity stadium in 2017.
A report presented by the Zomba City Council finance committee in June indicated that the total budget for stadium construction is K4.6 billion.
The project is being financed by Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
