Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has insisted that the venue of the FDH Bank Cup’s Round of 32 Match No. 5 between Karonga United and Be Forward Wanderers will be played at Mzuzu Stadium this coming Saturday.
This follows Karonga United Football Club’s protest and withdraws from the CUP citing irregularities in FAM’s decision to change the venue of the said match.
“The Football Association of Malawi acknowledges receipt of your letter dated 22nd June 2021 on your intention to withdraw from the 2021 FDH Bank Cup following FAM’s decision to change the venue of the Cup’s Round of 32 Match No. 5 between Karonga United and Be Forward Wanderers from Karonga Stadium to Mzuzu Stadium.
“FAM would like to once again underline that the decision to change the match venue was done in the best interest of the competition as guided by the Competition’s Rules and Regulations after noting that Karonga Stadium is not in good condition to hold an elite match as per the FAM Club Licensing standards and FAM COVID-19 Football Re- Start Guidelines, after it was vandalised on Sunday 20th June 2021,” reads in part the letter.
Added the letter: “We would like to remind Karonga United on its signed commitment to adhere to Club Licensing regulations as well as the 2021 FDH Cup Rules and Regulations and we expect the Club to respect the decision of FAM in the matter at hand. Withdrawing from the Competition at this level is not allowed and doing so attracts heavy sanctions as per article 4 of the 2021 FDH Cup Rules and Regulations which includes a yearlong ban from all Association Football competitions in Malawi.
“FAM hereby advises that it will proceed to schedule the match at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday 26th June 2021 at 14:30 hours and we expect all the concerned parties to follow the match programme as per the Rules and Regulations.”
Meanwhile Karonga United is yet to comment on the matter.
